Bar-B-Que Beach:
Just as the name implies, this new restaurant offers all sorts
of barbecue food in a beach-like setting. The authentic pit
barbecue offers ribs, brisket, pork and chicken in delightful
surroundings that feature tiki-style umbrellas, cane chairs,
coral rock, an enormous tree in the center of the room and a
turquoise floor. A few of the specialties: Jamaican Chicken
Wings ($10) that are grilled, so there’s no heavy breading, just
meat, and cooked in a slow roaster for hours until ready to fall
off the bone. The Piggie Platter (big or small) includes ribs,
pulled pork, beef brisket and half a chicken. A 14-ounce Prime
Rib Special ($16) includes mashed potatoes and gravy, veggies

Barton G. The Restaurant:
American dining favorites get a contemporary flair that’s fun
and sophisticated. In addition to taste, it’s all about the
drama. Creativity goes into the presentation of each dish.
Included in the appetizer fare are Coconut-Crusted Voodoo
Shrimp, Disco Crab, Sashimi Snow Cones and Lobster Pop Tarts.
Entrées with names like Samurai Warrior Tuna, Back at the Ranch

Bella Cuba:
Cuban cuisine by way of Ireland hits South Beach thanks to owner
and Chef Juan Carlos Gonzalez, who opened his first Bella Cuba
in Dublin in 1999. Appetizers include timbale of tiger shrimp,
yucca and avocado ($8.50) and chef’s house croquettes ($7.95).
Entrées range from chicken with chorizo stuffing ($17.95) to
Caribbean rack of lamb ($21.95). Dinner comes with vegetables,

Big Pink:
This South Pointe eatery has become popular among locals and
tourists. The menu is fairly extensive: salads, hamburgers,

renourishment station for club-hoppers.

Café Avanti:
On the walls, replicas of Italian masterpieces get you in the
mood as you await the food, which includes such dishes as
homemade mozzarella and Colorado lamb chops with spinach. Also

Café Maurice:
Relocating to South Beach after 11 successful years in Los
Angeles, Café Maurice offers a less pricey evening out than its
neighbors in SoFi, or south of Fifth Street. Menu items include
Coeurs D’Artichaud ($5.75), heart of artichoke, marinated with
herb of Provence; Escargots Bourgogne ($9.75), full of garlic,
butter and (secret ingredient) a touch of pastis; and Hachis
Parmentier, or Shepherd’s Pie, ($12.75) a thin layer of ground
beef sandwiched between two hearty layers of mashed potatoes and
topped with a bit of parmesan and mozzarella. Desserts ($4 each)
include Charlotte Chocolate, Crème Brûlée and Tiramisu. Starting
at 5 p.m. every evening, guests are greeted with a flute of
champagne and a small ramekin of shelled peanuts until their
dinner is served. By midnight Café Maurice turns into a cabaret
with Gypsy music and the dancing doesn’t stop until 5 a.m.

than the pasta that keeps reeling diners in. The Portobello al

piled high over fresh spinach leaves and the Insalata del

It was worth waiting years for Table 8 to open in the new Regent
Hotel on Ocean Drive. Although Govind Armstrong, its star
executive chef and co-owner, was in L.A. at his other restaurant
this night, the evening’s menu, which included Florida Grouper
stuffed with crisp prosciutto, dressed with roasted asparagus
and Roma tomatoes tossed in olive oil, black pepper and garlic,
came off without a hitch. The restaurant serves dinner only,
Florida cuisine, priced at $13 to $26 for appetizers and $28 to
